In summary: "Ode to the Gunnera", by Seattle artist Joan Stuart Ross, accompanied by a linoleum block cut by Chris Chen, printed in August 2003 in San Francisco. Set in Perpetua Italic. Edition of 190. In particular: Joan Stuart Ross, also painter, printmaker, and educator, has graciously submitted this month's poem, /Ode to the Gunnera/. I waffled on what sort of visual element to include--because Joan had also made a series of paintings and drawings in an art book of hers that featured the poem, there was the possibility of having reproductions of parts of that work printed in a commercial shop, but in the end, having passed by one-too-many linoleum blocks, I cut a block that seems to work reasonably well. I printed a larger edition than normal this time 'round. My arms are still tired... The type, Perpetua Italic, is the italic companion to Perpetua, both designed by Eric Gill in the 1920's. Gill was a British stone cutter and a strange man, who happened to design another stunningly famous typeface, Gill Sans, modeled after sign lettering designed for the London Underground. Yes, you saw it here, er, there first. The format's pretty simple. If you've previously received a postcard and haven't changed your address, you don't need to do anything. If you've moved or just feel like I'm not going to have your actual address, you can send me a update. If you want off the boat, you can say that too, yarrr. As always, please contribute! We love original contributions more than digging through the public domain (which is sometimes fun) or breaking copyright laws (depending on who you are need or don't need changing)! Postcards aren't horribly expensive, but your donations do offset the cost of materials, which always helps. Thanks!
